The later famous gangster, Al Capone, was born the fourth of nine children. (Alphonse, James, Raffaele, Salvatore, John, Albert, Matthew, Rose and Mafalda.) His parents Gabriele and Teresa were immigrants from Italy and Al Capone was the first of his siblings to be born in America. His father worked at a barber shop until Alphonse reached the age of 11, when his family moved to Park Slope, New York. As a child, Capone attended a parochial Catholic school and became a troubled student who didn't choose to follow the rules. At 14 years of age, Al Capone dropped out of school after he was expelled for striking a female teacher across the face. He then began working at a local candy store and a bowling alley. While working at a young age, Capone joined a gang where he was influenced by Johnny Torrio (a well-known gangster).
At an older age, Al Capone met his future wife Mae Josephine Coughlin. His first and only son was born in November of 1918, Albert Francis Capone. Al Capone and Mae Josephine Coughlin wed later in the year on December 30, 1918.
