Trials & Jail Life
In 1929, an investigation of Capone and his business began by the Bureau of Prohibition. Their goal was to bust him for Prohibition violations. He was then investigated by Frank J. Wilson for income tax violations, which was a crime much more likely for conviction due to strong evidence. Capone was then put on trial for income tax evasion and multiple violations of Prohibition. He attempted to bribe and intimidate the jurors on his trial, but he was caught and a new jury pool was brought in and switched with the original. On October 17, Al Capone was charged with 5 counts of tax evasion and failure to file tax returns. His convictions of violation of Prohibition were dropped.
Capone was charged with 11 years in jail combined with large amounts of fines. Law-enforcement seized his armored limousine which was ironically later used to protect President Franklin D. Roosevelt after the attack on Pearl Harbor.
In May of 1932, Capone was sent to the Atlanta U.S. Penitentiary. There he was allowed only certain privileges. Capone was later sent to the Lincoln Heights Jail and then transfered to Alcatraz on August 11, 1934. Alcatraz is a prison on an island off of the coasts of San Francisco. In the prison, Capone was kept under tight watch and was isolated from the outside world. During Capone's sentence, Prohibition was voided reducing his power.

He was then released on parol on November 16, 1939 and sent home to Palm Island, Florida.
